It is winter, and this is the time to ensure your family is safe from the “silent killer”. Many deaths occur because of the production of Carbon Monoxide (CO) from the use of heating appliances during the winter.
CO is produced in devices that use fuels, including wood. Electrical appliances may have shock or fire risks, but do not produce CO. Common sources of CO include kerosene room heaters, fuel-using furnaces, charcoal grills, gas ranges, cars, fireplaces, and generators.
To avoid CO poisoning, one should follow these tips:
- Ensure proper installation –follow instructions;
- Ensure adequate combustion air for complete combustion;
- Ensure to vent appliances as required;
- Allow professionals to install combustion appliances;
- Do not let a car run in a closed garage;
- Do not run an emergency generator in the house or outside near a location that can vent fumes into the house.
- Buy carbon monoxide detectors for your home.
